Ken Watanabe was born in Niigata Prefecture to a family of educators — his mother was a teacher and his father taught calligraphy. He spent his childhood in rural Niigata, and as a high schooler played trumpet, originally aspiring to a career in music. But when his father fell seriously ill when Watanabe was 13, he abandoned his musical ambitions and turned to acting instead. After graduating high school in 1978, he moved alone to Tokyo, joined the Engeki-Shudan En theatre troupe, and gained early recognition in stage productions directed by Yukio Ninagawa — this rigorous stage training became the foundation of his acting career.

Watanabe's television career reached a major turning point when he played the title role in NHK's taiga drama Dokugan-ryū Masamune, rapidly building his profile in Japan. But just as his career was taking off, in 1989 he was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia while filming Heaven and Earth — he underwent chemotherapy while continuing to work, and suffered a relapse in 1991. This battle with illness profoundly reshaped his approach to life and to acting.

His portrayal of Katsumoto, a samurai leader upholding bushido against the Westernizing tide of the Meiji Restoration, and his evolving relationship with Tom Cruise's American officer, from adversaries to mutual understanding, formed the film's emotional core. The role earned him an Academy Award nomination and marked the pivotal turning point from domestic Japanese actor to internationally recognized talent.
