Early Life

Hou Hsiao-hsien was born in 1947 to a Hakka family in Meixian, Guangdong, moving to Taiwan with his parents shortly after birth, growing up in Fengshan, Kaohsiung during his childhood and adolescence — this experience of growing up as a 'mainlander' yet raised on native Taiwanese soil later became an important root of the ethnic identity themes he repeatedly explored throughout his work. He graduated from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts) film program, formally entering the film industry in 1973, starting from behind-the-scenes work as a script supervisor and assistant director, before finally getting the chance to direct in the early 1980s.

1983's The Sandwich Man and The Boys from Fengkuei established him as one of the central figures of the Taiwan New Cinema movement, which — alongside directors like Edward Yang — fundamentally redirected Taiwanese cinema away from its long dependence on commercial genre film, embracing realism, long takes, and non-professional actors, pioneering an entirely new cinematic language rooted in the land and everyday life of ordinary people.

The Taiwan Trilogy and the Long-Take Aesthetic: Letting Time Speak for Itself

Hou's most representative achievement is the 'Taiwan Trilogy' — A City of Sadness, The Puppetmaster, and Good Men, Good Women — directly confronting the most politically sensitive taboos of Taiwan's postwar history, including the 228 Incident and the White Terror. 1989's A City of Sadness won him the Golden Lion at Venice, the first Chinese-language film to receive that honor, and marked the first time the 228 Incident could be openly discussed on the big screen. Hou has consistently maintained an almost documentary-like 'observer' stance — fixed camera positions, long takes, actors naturally staged in deep space, without close-ups or score to manipulate emotion, letting history and feeling surface on their own.

This aesthetic language later influenced an entire generation of Asian directors — from Jia Zhangke in China to Hirokazu Kore-eda in Japan, traces of Hou's long-take aesthetic can be seen. 2015's The Assassin proved once more, in his later years, that even within the action-above-all commercial genre of wuxia, he could maintain his detached, restrained authorial style — and won him the Best Director award at Cannes for it.

Marriage & Family

Hou's private life has always been kept low-profile, rarely discussing family details publicly — consistent with his signature 'non-intervening observer' approach to life itself. He and his wife, Cao Baofeng, have children, though family information has deliberately remained largely out of public view for years. His long-running creative team — screenwriters Chu T'ien-wen and Wu Nien-jen, cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bin — form one of the most stable and influential creative collectives in Taiwanese film history, a collaborative relationship spanning decades that, in some sense, defines his artistic life more than his personal family life does.

Legacy

Hou Hsiao-hsien, with an almost stubborn aesthetic conviction, proved that cinema doesn't need dramatized plot momentum to move audiences deeply — his long-take aesthetic influenced an entire generation of Asian directors including Jia Zhangke and Hirokazu Kore-eda, and made Taiwan New Cinema a chapter of world film history that cannot be ignored. From the personal memory of A Time to Live, A Time to Die, to confronting historical taboo head-on in A City of Sadness, to subverting the wuxia genre in The Assassin, Hou has always maintained the stance of the 'non-intervening observer,' letting time itself, letting negative space itself, speak. Through a lifetime of work, he proved that true cinematic emotion often lies not in plot climaxes, but in the depths of those seemingly plain moments in time that can never be relived.
