Edward Yang was born in Shanghai in 1947 and moved to Taipei with his family at age two. His educational and career path is remarkably unusual among Chinese-language directors — he graduated in Control Engineering from National Chiao Tung University in 1969, earned a Master's in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1974, and briefly studied film at USC for a year before abandoning it, disillusioned with the film education of the time. He then spent seven years as a computer engineer in Seattle, designing supercomputer-related systems. This decade-plus of engineering training later became a key root of his precise, cool, structurally rigorous narrative style — almost like an engineering blueprint.
In 1981, a phone call from a friend in Taiwan prompted him to abandon his stable engineering career and return to Taiwan to pursue film. In 1982 he contributed a segment to the omnibus film In Our Time, and the following year released his debut feature That Day, on the Beach, formally joining Hou Hsiao-hsien and others in launching the Taiwan New Cinema movement. Where Hou's aesthetic leaned toward rural realism and long takes, Yang's camera was always trained on the city — his Taipei is a vast experimental ground of rapid modernization, collapsing traditional values, and increasingly cold, alienated human relationships.
Yang's films almost never leave the city — Taipei's apartment towers, offices, convenience stores, and karaoke rooms form his consistent stage. Using narrative structures as precise as engineering diagrams (typified by The Terrorizers, Mahjong, and Yi Yi), he weaves seemingly unrelated characters' fates into an intricate web of causality, revealing the urban malady of modernity: people who appear tightly interconnected yet are fundamentally alienated. This rational, restrained, almost unsentimental narrative language has drawn frequent comparisons to Ingmar Bergman and Yasujirō Ozu — both masters of confronting the most complex humanity with the coolest possible camera language.
2000's Yi Yi, the pinnacle and culmination of his artistic career, is a family epic spanning three generations of the Jian family — birth, aging, sickness, death, first love, infidelity — and won him Best Director at Cannes, yet ironically never received a formal theatrical release in Taiwan during his lifetime. In 2007, Yang died of colon cancer in Beverly Hills at age 59, leaving behind an unfinished animated film project and marking the loss of one of Taiwan New Cinema's last major standard-bearers.
Yang's first marriage was to renowned singer Tsai Chin, whom he met through the film Taipei Story; they married in 1985 and divorced in 1995 — a decade-long marriage frequently described in reports as platonic and largely sexless, a private chapter he rarely discussed publicly. After the divorce, Yang remarried pianist Kaili Peng, with whom he had a son, Sean, and a daughter. When he died of colon cancer in 2007, Peng was by his side through his final days, and spoke on behalf of the family afterward, describing him as "an exceptional human being, one of the greatest modern filmmakers."
Edward Yang was Taiwan New Cinema's most urban and most rational voice — where Hou Hsiao-hsien's long takes gazed at land and history, Yang used narrative structures as precise as engineering blueprints to dissect the disintegrating human connections of a modernizing Taipei. His engineering-trained rationalism meant his films never relied on sentimentality or dramatic climax, instead confronting the hypocrisy, alienation, and loneliness of the urban middle class with a coolness bordering on cruelty. From the urban allegory of The Terrorizers, to the generational tragedy of A Brighter Summer Day, to the encyclopedic summation of every life stage in Yi Yi, Yang, in just 59 years, left behind a grammar of urban cinema still studied by film scholars worldwide.
Thank you for capturing Taipei's coolest and most profound loneliness with an engineer's precision, Edward Yang.
