His 1968 debut in The Lion in Winter had him sparring on screen with Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn; over the next two decades he moved between British and American television, stage, and film, building a body of critically respected but not yet blockbuster work in films like The Elephant Man and 84 Charing Cross Road. The true turning point from "respected character actor" to "Hollywood icon" came with 1991's The Silence of the Lambs — not only winning him the Academy Award for Best Actor, but making Hannibal Lecter one of cinema's most unforgettable villains, redefining a generation's idea of screen terror.

In 1993, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to drama. Hopkins achieved sobriety in 1975 through Alcoholics Anonymous and has remained sober for nearly fifty years. He has spoken openly about how his alcoholism damaged his relationship with daughter Abigail, from whom he has long been estranged. He has said plainly: "I accept that some wounds in life never fully heal, but I've learned to live alongside them instead of letting guilt consume me." This philosophy of acceptance and release has deeply shaped how he approaches many of his later roles.
